Scratch Video Re-visited

March 22, 2019 by nickcopefilm

The programme notes for the Rewind screening of Scratch videos in 2008 described Scratch being ‘generally forgotten about in contemporary culture’. Since then there has been a re-emergence of interest in Scratch. In writing about my own experience and engagement in the original scene of the early 1980s and the contexts for this in my PhD in 2012, a number of opportunities have arisen since for screenings of older work, as well as to present academic papers and publish both […]

The collaboration between electroacoustic composer Tim Howle and myself has continued following production of the four short films collected together as Electroacoustic Movies (2003-2008) with further video outputs, as well as screenings, live sound diffusion performances and a range of academic research outputs. We have presented papers about the collaboration at UK and international conferences, and published in a number of journals including Divergence, Screenworks, Sightlines and a special issue on Creative Practice in Filmmaking and Screen Production for Studies […]

Songtsam

March 17, 2019 by nickcopefilm

In Autumn 2017 I travelled in northern Yunnan, China, filming and photographing the unique environment and culture of the region. At this time I had the good fortune of meeting Baima Dorje, the Tibetan owner of a circuit of boutique hotels in the region. Baima had previously produced a number of documentaries shot in the region and we got talking about Tibetan culture and filming, and one thing led to another, resulting in me spending much of 2018 collaborating with […]

October 14, 2013 by nickcopefilm

PhD by Existing Creative Published Work; Northern Industrial Scratch: the history and contexts of a visual music practice, University of Sunderland, October 2012.  Locates a contemporary visual music practice within current and emerging critical and theoretical contexts and tracks back the history of this practice to initial screenings of work as part of the 1980’s British Scratch video art movement. At the heart of this work is an exploration and examination of methods and working practices in the encounter of […]

Journeys East

October 14, 2013 by nickcopefilm

Journeys East is an emerging educational online web project; video and image database; and starting point for documentary, creative media and installation based projects, centered around a film and photographic resource collated during travels in Tibet, Yunnan and Sichuan, China, and south east Asia. Organising and making this resource of around 100 hours of video and thousands of photos available to other practitioners/art practitioners, researchers, museums and scholars opens opportunities for collaboration, scholarship and creative practice. The archive features footage […]

October 11, 2013 by nickcopefilm

On the occasion of Chris Watson‘s installation ‘Whispering in the Leaves’ at the Sunderland Winter Gardens, commissioned for AVFest 2008, film maker and academic Nick Cope took the opportunity to interview the Newcastle based and world-renowned sound recordist, experimental musician and sound artist  about his work, for Sounding Out, the international academic conference on sound and the moving image. Electroacoustic Movies

October 10, 2013 by nickcopefilm

“We find that music is not limited to the world of sound; there also exists a music of the visual world.” -Oskar Fischinger, 1951 In May 2002 following the concert/performance, Cinema for the Ear, at Sir Alan Ayckbourn’s Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, my then University of Hull colleague, electroacoustic music composer Dr Tim Howle (now Professor of Contemporary Music at the University of Kent), instigated what has become an ongoing collaboration exploring the conjunction of electroacoustic composition […]

Installation, Projection and Public Arts projects

October 5, 2013 by nickcopefilm

Since the earliest days of screening work in public, in concerts with Tiab Guls/Metamorphosis in the early 1980s, through to more current recent work with Tim Howle, public presentation of my work has involved exploration of expanded cinematic practices, installation and multi-projection possibilities. Sometimes this has been in live cinema and concert contexts, in nightclubs, concert halls or conference spaces; sometimes in galleries, site-specific locations, or public spaces; using film, video, computer or slide projection, or a combination of all […]

Cinema for the Ear

October 4, 2013 by nickcopefilm

Cinema for the Ear was a  concert of electroacoustic music and live digital video projections held at Sir Alan Ayckbourn’s Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, England, in May 2002. Organized and produced by Rob Mackay and the University of Hull’s Creative Music Technology department and featuring a selection of work by internationally renowned contemporary composers, staff and students from the department.  I was invited to create a visual accompaniment to the sixty minute music programme, mixing pre-prepared digital video sources of […]

Cabaret Voltaire: Groovy, Laidback and Nasty

September 27, 2013 by nickcopefilm

“Above him, a huge screen fast-cuts disjointed images from three film projectors – a disorientating mixture of abstract patterns, ethnic dancing, whizzing travelscapes and faces.” – Cabaret Voltaire, live, Hacienda, Manchester; Melody Maker, June, 1990 Grainy Croatian TV footage of Cabaret Voltaire live in Zagreb in 1990 is mixed and montaged with the original show visuals to give an indication of the multi-projection live shows of this time. I moved to London in 1987 making contact once again with Paul […]

Earthdance

September 26, 2013 by nickcopefilm

Work with Mandragora came to  fruition in 2004/5 with the Earthdance project. Simon Williams of Mandragora and musician Phil Thornton approached me with the prospect of putting together a taster DVD for the world music compilation album ‘Chill le Monde’ on the Blue Dot Music label, which they were mixing and producing. Five two-minute pieces were put together (below), using footage from my own archives as well as video material provided by Phil Thornton, Simon Williams and Graham Mark. Whilst […]

Digitaldrift.net / 33degrees

September 24, 2013 by nickcopefilm

“The dérive, or drift, was defined as the ‘technique of locomotion without goal’, in which ‘ one or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.’ “  – Plant, S. (1992) The Most Radical Gesture. London: Routledge. http://www.digitaldrift.net was a web art project created around the turn of the millennium. It […]

Mandragora

September 23, 2013 by nickcopefilm

In the late 1990s, whilst based in Southampton, I got to know Brighton based Mandragora at the time that they were working on their album Pollen. We talked about putting some visuals together for live shows, and I edited a number of videos to various tracks from the album. This material included reworking and remixing some of the visuals from Groovy, Laidback and Nasty, as well as working with some other Super 8 animations from the early 1990s, that had been processed […]

O Yuki Conjugate

September 23, 2013 by nickcopefilm

Further opportunities for live performative audiovisual work arose in the early 1990s with old friends from Nottingham, ambient music group O Yuki Conjugate, now also based in London. Collaborating on an audio-visual accompaniment to several performances scheduled in the Netherlands in 1992 and 1993 incorporating video and slide projection, as part of the Tegentonen Festival (1992) and The Ambient Weekend, and screened on VPRO TV in Amsterdam in February 1993. My own abstract Super 8 animations were mixed with abstract […]
